This is one of the ten toa (Maori - meaning a carved pole to honour and represent) situated in the courtyard outside Whangarei Library - this one honours all the Celts who settled in Northland.
As well as the Maori and Celts, Dalmatians, Koreans and the people of the Pacific Islands are also represented.

For some reason I associated this with totem poles of Alaska and the Eskimos. I suppose other cultures would have them too, and they do. Just like the pyramids are in many other places besides Egypt. Nice photo of such a tall object.
ReplyDeleteWe are used to totem poles here in Canada - there are some fabulous ones out on the west coast. I like the weathered effect of the wood on this one and the carvings look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThat's fascinating. Similar to the North American totem pole but used differently.
ReplyDeleteI love how the light is hitting the top of the toa. Wonderful capture!
The totem pole is definitely very similar to the totem pole - I know that both the Maori and the Native American cultures have a close connection with their use of carvings and wood. I know there is a totem pole gift from a Native American carver on Awataha Marae (meeting place) down in Auckland
